The Story Teller (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

The Story Teller is a Science Fiction novel with a difference. Past and present come together in ten stories told by an old man, reminiscing about a tragedy that, in his youth, struck his hometown. An environmental disaster and criminal bungling in handling a crisis, brought the town to the brink of destruction. Characters and plot are typical of a small rivertown setting in the 1930’s but can be imagined to picture present-day global issues relating to power grabbing, moral corruption, political squabbling, poverty and rioting and in the end, the tragic result of human failure to live in harmony with nature. The imaginative reader may even spot contemporary politics in this ancient story. Two families, one in transport and cattle feed and the other in shipbuilding, strive for dominance in Carlyle They have their supporters which divides the townfolk in two camps while the local ouncillor makes use of this bickering to stuff his own pockets. He allows the feedstock factory to dump poisonous waste in the river with disastrous results. Has nature a sense of revenge? The story teller thinks it has, which in the end causes a major plant disease threatening farmers’ livelihood, followed by a flood that drowns Carlyle to the point of annihilation. This story is a fantasy that puts man and nature as opposing entities, one threatening the other with an outcome that favours nature but allows man to reconsider his position as a welcome, caring visitor to planet Earth, rather than a greedy, harmful semi-permanent guest.
