1985 Northern Sudan, The narrator and his wife Alice provide security for a small American oil company prospecting team led by their mate Alex going into the Sudan. On the way to the job they take a holiday cruise up the Egyptian Nile. Just as they are about to take the ferry across the lake to Sudan they are approached by US intelligence officers. Reluctantly they agree to combine their work with a more potentially dangerous mission. This plunges them into local and international politics. The action ranges from the waters of the upper Nile to the trackless wastes of the Nubian desert. The fire djinn Alice with her long ginger hair calls herself the unexpected on as they try to avoid Gordon's grisly fate. An adventure full of action, humour, romance and steeped in history.
