Josip Broz Tito (1892–1980) came from a poor peasant family in Croatia. He fought in the Austro–Hungarian army in the First World War before being taken prisoner by the Russians. After witnessing the revolution which brought the Bolsheviks to power in 1917 he returned home to join the Yugoslav Communist Party, which he headed from 1937. Tito’s leadership of the Partisan resistance to Axis occupation during the Second World War helped him to gain power and institute a communist regime in Yugoslavia. His defiance of Stalin in 1948 allowed Yugoslavia to pursue an independent path to socialism and brought Tito worldwide respect as the leader of the non-aligned countries during the Cold War. In his later years Tito fought to control the resurgence of nationalist sentiment which would eventually tear Yugoslavia apart. The Ten Short Chapters series presents clear and concise accounts of great figures and events in history. Written in a straightforward, no-nonsense style they give brief but informative introductions to historical subjects and are ideal for both students and general readers.
