After Stephanie graduates from the convent boarding school she expects to be working in her father's office. Instead, her mother keeps her as housemaid and nursemaid to her younger siblings. She has no rights, no privileges but only work. She meets Leon during dancing class, but her relationship has to be kept secret. She is devastated when Leon suddenly leaves town without a word to her. When she finds a letter from Leon that her mother had withheld, she runs away and ends up stranded in a big city. She finds Leon again, they take a ride to the East-West German border where she gets arrested by the East German border guards. This incident separates her from Leon for over a year, during which time a lot of soul-searching helps her to assert herself against her mother and to better understand herself.
