The story of the 24th Infantry Regiment in Koreais a difficult one, both for the veterans of theunit and for the Army. In the early weeks of theKorean War, most American military units experiencedproblems as the U.S. Army attempted totransform understrength, ill-equipped, and inadequatelytrained forces into an effective combat teamwhile at the same time holding back the fierceattacks of an aggressive and well-prepared opponent. In addition to the problems other regimentsfaced in Korea, the 24th Infantry also had to overcomethe effects of racial prejudice. Ultimately thesoldiers of the regiment, despite steadfast courageon the part of many, paid the price on the battlefieldfor the attitudes and misguided policies of theArmy and their nation.
