Two sisters leave Massachusetts to teach at a Choctaw missionary school in Indian Territory in the 1880's. On their way they meet a marshal for Judge Parker's court and encounter outlaws who threaten their safety. With descriptive imagery that puts the reader right in the mountains of eastern Oklahoma, this story follows the journey of the two sisters from Boston by train to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where they set off on horseback through the Winding Stair Mountains to reach the school where they will work. One of the sisters finds love as well as a reason for coming to this far away territory.
