In this short book I examine the differing ontological views of the universe and the effect of these ideas on the fiction of Ursula K. Le Guin and C. S. Lewis. By comparing the Buddhist monism of Le Guin with the Christian pluralism of Lewis, I hope to show the resulting respective values that are revealed in their oeuvres: Le Guin’s Buddhist philosophy places a greater emphasis on life, because the monist view does not question what is, but seeks to accept and realize oneness in the universe. Lewis’s Christian world view, on the other hand, maintains there are many selves in the universe, including the transcendent God who created them, and therefore pluralist free will exists and mandates the importance of love.
