"As to the first, viz. my being repulsed at the beginning of my proceeding, I must confess it made a very profound and ungrateful Impression upon me, and made me weep before the Lord, and lament after this manner, Oh, that God would take away my Life from me! Oh, that I might have my Request, even to dye! And being full fraight with Reasonings, it made me argue after this manner, O Lord! if indeed thou be the Author of this my Concern, and thy Power is strong above every power of the Enemy, Why am I thus disappointed, rejected and contemned? But after a time my Spirit was brought under the Moderation of the Cool of the Day, and then I saw, that God, for Reasons known to himself, doth suffer the Blasphemies, Revilings and bitter Reproachings of the basest of Men, and by that we are taught not to exalt our selves above our Lord and Master. And further, the matter was clear'd up to me, from those Scriptures, 1 Kings 20.35. 'tis said, A certain Man of the Sons of the Prophets, said unto his Neighbour, in the Word of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee; and the Man refused to smite him, &c. And in Judges 20.18. 'tis further said, And the men of Israel arose, and went up to the House of God, and asked Counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the Battle? [Pray observe]..." This is an edition of a classical book first published in the eighteenth century.
