Anna’s older sister, Marita, sends her a small box with a half dozen bandannas. Anna wears the pretty red one to school and shows it off to her girlfriends. But a girl middle school gang member calls out Anna because she sees her bandanna as a gang color. Anna doesn’t belong to a gang. Mac and Kevin, two of Anna’s friends, meet her for lunch by the basketball courts. Mac cracks a joke about using Anna’s bandanna to clean off his skateboard. Their friend Ray drops by and looks out of sorts. Somebody stole his expensive gym shoes and he knows that his dad is going to chew him out for not being responsible for his stuff. He thinks he knows who stole his shoes, but is afraid to do more than report the theft. Kevin show his support for Ray, pointing out that someone at school ripped off his Raider’s cap and that it was never found. Shaneen walks up to the table with a tray of food. Ray tells her about his stolen shoes. Shaneen tells the others that she had a talk with Mr. Wilkerson, the assistant principal, who told her that the students may have to start wearing uniforms. He believes that too many people are fighting over clothes and that having students wear the same uniform may solve the problem. This begins a group discussion about having a dress code in middle school. The next day, Ray is still mad about his stolen shoes. He hated wearing his beat up Converse, the ones he used to work in the yard. Kevin skateboards up to the lunch table and motions Ray to follow him to the visitor’s parking lot. On the corner sat a day-pack, right next to a brand new Nike shoe box. What will Ray do? This is both a story about uniforms for middle school and doing the right thing. Discussion and review questions help you to think about how you would handle these two subjects.
