Louis Armstrong was born on the 4th of July, 1900, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His family lived in a run-down home in an area restricted for African-Americans called Back O’ Town. The house had no running water, electricity or gas. His father worked in a factory and his teenage mother cooked for a rich white family on the other side of town. Young Louis spent most of his time playing in the streets and alleys of his neighborhood that were filthy with garbage and broken glass. When his father left the family, his mother moved Louis and his sister to an apartment in another part of town, where there were shops, offices and bars on every corner. Louis heard music everywhere. He heard dock workers singing rhythmic songs down on the ports. He heard powerful gospel songs ringing from the churches. In the streets and squares, he heard and saw marching bands, with brass instruments like trumpets, trombones and tubas. Something special was happening in New Orleans. A new style of music was being formed. Louis was fascinated by this new music that people called jazz. Louis’ favorite instrument was the coronet. It looked like a small trumpet, and it was often used as the lead instrument in jazz music. Its high notes could silence a room or travel for miles. Wanting to help his mother with their expenses, Louis dropped out of school when he was only nine. He delivered coal during the day and sang with a group of friends on street corners at night. The group had great success, often earning as much or more money than Louis made delivering coal. One of the important facts about Louis Armstrong is that New Year’s Eve 1912 changed the life of young Louis forever. At the tender age of 12, he took an old pistol loaded with blanks from his mother’s trunk to use as fireworks. When Louis and his friends came across another group of boys with a pistol, Louis was urged to fire off some shots. Within seconds, Louis was arrested by a police detective and taken to a jail for young people. The next day Louis was placed in a police wagon and driven to a detention center for young boys in trouble called the Colored Waifs’ Home for Boys. This biography of the famous American musician presents important facts about Louis Armstrong, such as dropping out of school and firing a gun in public, which resulted in spending 18 months in a juvenile detention home. At the juvenile detention home for African-American youth, the young Louis joined the Waifs' Home Colored Band and learned to play the coronet. After years of playing in honky-tonks and learning his craft, Louis Armstrong rose above his troubled childhood to become a famous jazz musician. Purchase this e-book about Louis Armstrong jazz musician to learn how he rose above his difficult childhood to be known around the world as America's Ambassador of Jazz.
