In this exciting contemporary fantasy novella, 17-year-old Caroline Casey once again finds herself in a magical, mystical world. A qilin (with the head of a dragon and the body of a tiger) is supposed to be a mythological creature. However, when a qilin shows up in Caroline’s backyard, the adventure begins. Caroline and her friends seek to stop a plot against Betwixt, a mystical island that moves from dimension to dimension, from world to world. I don’t like being the damsel in distress. I consider myself to be a proactive person.” “ 'I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.' That’s a quote from the poem 'Invictus.' ” “Do you read a lot of poetry?” “No,” Talbot replied. “ 'Invictus' was a poem that my father liked. He used to quote that line occasionally.” “Oh.” I smiled at him. “So, Talbot, it must be cool to be a superhero with superpowers. Are you going to start wearing a mask like Batman and Spiderman?” Talbot laughed. “I don’t think so.” “But it would be cool!” I said jokingly. “And you could get a matching, little bulletproof costume for Rover.” “It’s probably best to leave Rover ‘holding down the fort’ at home,” he said. “Maybe you’re right.” I glanced at the table where Kateri and Damien were laughing as they enjoyed their breakfast together. “They’re such a cute couple,” I observed. “They’re so good together.” “When we arrived on this island, it never occurred to me that Damien would find his true love here. Even though Damien is a great guy and better looking than I am, I’m surprised that Kateri is so attracted to him.” “You’re better looking than …..” I started to say, then caught myself in time. “I’m better looking than whom?” Talbot asked with a wide grin. “A zombie. You’re better looking than a zombie, Talbot.” “Thanks, Caroline. You know how to flatter a guy.” “You’re welcome.” I again looked over at Damien and Kateri. “I’m going to go over to their table and tell Kateri some nice things about Damien.” “Caroline, are you familiar with the novel 'Emma' by Jane Austen?” “No. What’s it about?” “It’s about a charming young woman named Emma. She tries to play matchmaker for her friends, but she causes a lot of confusion.” “Do you think that I’m charming, Talbot?” “Caroline, that wasn’t the point of the literary allusion.” “I know that wasn’t the point, but I want to know if you find me charming. Remember that I will know whether or not you are telling the truth.” Talbot sighed loudly. “Oh, good grief, I don’t know. I suppose so.” “Thank you, Talbot. You’re sometimes kind of charming yourself.” Our happy, lighthearted morning came to a dramatic end a few seconds later. Rumlad came running into the room. “Enemy forces are approaching the eastern beach!
