Her friends include two gnomes (Hob and Nob), a troll named Sylvester, elves, fairies, and a qilin (with the head of a dragon and the body of a tiger). After Caroline travels through a mystical gateway to Ireland, she meets a young man whom she finds both annoying and intriguing. Excerpt: When Leviathan had come up onto the beach, the two witches had been crushed beneath its massive body. Both witches seemed to be dead, but I hurried over to check on them. Sagehorn and Sean had the same idea. They came running past me. Sean knelt down and examined the taller witch. “This woman is dead,” Sean said and closed his eyes. It seemed to me that he was praying, but I wasn’t sure. Sagehorn stooped down on one knee and looked at the shorter witch. Her eyes opened. “Hail, Elven Prince. Your victory is complete. Your enemies lie dead at your feet. Rejoice.” “I rejoice not in death. This is a day both fair and foul,” Sagehorn said and turned toward Sean. “Can you do anything for her?” Taking the thermos filled with a revitalizing elixir, Sean gently helped the witch take a drink of the elixir. He also provided her with some additional medical assistance, but it soon became evident that she would soon be dead. “I appreciate your efforts,” she said. “There is still time to make the right decision, good woman,” Sagehorn urged her. “This is the hour of mercy. We could meet again on a brighter day on a happier field.” “Thank you, kind Prince,” she said as her eyes closed. She was gone. Sagehorn and Sean stood up. “Did she repent before she died?” I asked anxiously. Sean shrugged. “I don’t know, Caroline. We’ll hope for the best.” A short while later, as we walked inland toward the village, I reflected upon how the day’s events could have transpired differently if the hand of Providence had not turned the tide of battle in our favor. In my mind’s eye, I saw Sagehorn and the other elves dying on the beach while the sorcerer and two witches stood over them. The witches and sorcerer would have gloated over and mocked their enemies as they died. Fortunately, that scenario had not occurred. Instead, Sagehorn and Sean had tried to save the life of the surviving witch. Then, when they realized that they could not save her mortal life, they tried to save her soul. I thought about the nobility and goodness of the Elven Prince as I recalled seeing his eyes fill with tears as the witch died.
