Ben Carter is in his twenties. He is stuck in a crappy, dead-end job, going nowhere. Then he sees an advert for a televised Battle of the Bands competition, similar to The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent etc. He is the lead guitarist and singer in a band and he and his friends decide to enter. Their acceptance provides Ben with a chance to prove himself and escape his humdrum existence.Their progress through the competition provides the backdrop to the real story of the book: Ben’s relationship with childhood friend Lucy. When he meets her again in adulthood she has grown into a stunningly beautiful woman, and he is immediately besotted. To his delight, she seems interested in him too. But of course, it’s not as simple as that. The plot twists and turns to include such subjects as love, death, marriage, infidelity, cheetahs, and plenty more besides.Readers have compared the writing style to those of Nick Hornby and Ben Elton.
