In the early 19th century a sickly young Englishman born in Portugal, Henry Koster, travelled to Brazil, hoping that the climate there would improve his health. Koster spent much of his time travelling through different parts of Brazil. Unfortunately Koster’s health did not improve, and he died in his mid to late 20s. But before he died, Koster wrote extensively about his travels in Brazil. “Slavery and Freedom in Early Nineteenth Century Pernambuco, Brazil” contains Koster’s descriptions of the people of the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Pernambuco was a sugar growing region with a diverse population that included Europeans, Africans, indigenous people, and all kinds of mixtures. The sugar planters of Brazil depended on the labor of enslaved Africans, who made up a large proportion of the population. Many of the enslaved people were field laborers on these plantations. Others, however, were employed in a variety of other positions. Some were drivers, supervising the field laborers with whips in hand. Others were domestic workers.
