The stories in this book were taken from original manuscripts left behind by a well-known Idaho writer, Dorothy Clapp Robinson. My grandmother. Grandma Robinson struggled early in life with tuberculosis then a heart attack when I was six months old. With frail health, she still had five children. Finally, a doctor recommended that she find a place to relieve the tensions in her stressful lifestyle. Her solution was to rise at three in the morning to write for an hour on a borrowed typewriter before doing the milking on the dairy. She wrote romance stories for a romance rag, children’s stories published in the Children’s Friend, women’s stories for the Relief Society Magazine, and political articles that were published in the newspapers. Eventually, she produced an income from those stories. Her novel, Contrary House, is no longer in print, but a few of her children’s stories can be found by Googling her name. A new book was published by Desert Book with some of her stories in it.Growing up in Ione, Idaho, my grandmother lived in the heat of the lavies, her eyes always seeing mysteries and romance in the land. She knew Eastern Idaho well and loved its treacherous lava beds created by flows from ancient volcanoes. Those memories remained after she married and moved around with her husband and five children, eventually ending in Boise, Idaho. The most dramatic lava beds are in Craters of the Moon National Park, but the lavies run from Idaho Falls in the east to the mountains in the middle upper portions of Idaho. Many ranches still exist in the thousands of open acres that encompass a land of sagebrush and lava rocks. All of it as deadly in the heat of Summer as it is in the cold of Winter. Even with my own memories of the lavies, I depended heavily on her notes and descriptions of the land, her language of things from the past, and the speech patterns.
