Lillian Marie Cline is finally widowed after forty years of an abusive marriage and has no use for men. She has come to the Kootenai National Forest to work as a volunteer Birder for Ranger Roberts but ends up with the bossy retired Ranger Russell instead. Lil's view of Ranger Russell, also known as Mr. B, is woven between attacks by the poachers and her attempts to prevent the death of his grizzly, her illnesses and his attempts to help her, the almost fatal attack by the dogs, and, her love of the Lord and how that plays in her life. Attempts to get to Church are thwarted from the very start by flat tires, rain storms, her injuries, mud slides, and Batsy who has a dislike of a Sister Summerhill, a rather different member of the Church branch in Libby, Montana. Added to that are the more spiritual moments when Lillian sings her own composition "Safe in All Things," thinking she is alone on the rocky ledge.
