Biographical profile of Robert Worth Bingham, publisher of the Louisville Courier Journal and American ambassador to the Court of St. James. Born to an old Southern family--his father was one of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan--Bingham was handsome, bright and unscrupulous. After he married his second wife, the richest woman in America, he wanted to purchase the Louisville Courier Journal and Times. Bankers told him they would provide financing if his wife bequeathed $5 million to him in a will. She died shortly after executing a codicil for the bequest, and controversy has swirled around the cause of her death. In a complete turnaround, Bingham began to champion the poor, minorities, and women. The Courier Journal garnered its first Pulitzers and FDR appointed him ambassador to England. Award-winning author and syndicated columnist Daniel Alef tells the story of Bingham's great metamorphosis from knave to knight in shining armor. [1,337-word Titans of Fortune article]
