With a production budget of approximately $950,000, Casablanca has grossed over 10 million dollars. Casablanca was a major success at the 16th Academy Awards, taking home Oscars for Outstanding Motion Picture, Best Director (Michael Curtiz), and Best Writing, Screenplay (Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and Howard Koch). Casablanca was also nominated for a number of other Academy Awards including Best Actor (Humphrey Bogart for his role as Rick Blaine), Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains for his role as Captain Renault), Best Cinematography (Arthur Edeson), Best Film Editing (Owen Marks), and Best Music (Max Steiner). The American Film Institute (AFI) ranked Casablanca as the third greatest movie of all time. BOOK EXCERPT From the Introduction by Elliot Zanger: Casablanca is one of my favorite films of all time. It's one of my favorite films because of the fact that it seems to magically to defy genre. All at once, Casablanca offers elements of drama, romance, suspense, comedy, and war. By doing this, Casablanca has something for everyone, regardless of what your movie preferences might be. But what's most amazing about Casablanca is not just that it defies genre, but that it does so in a way that actually enhances my viewing experience. I love the witty quips that Humphrey Bogart delivers as the smooth-talking Rick. I love the historical backdrop of World War II. I love the desperate romance between Ilsa and Rick. I love the corrupt yet likable Captain Renault. And I love the suspenseful plot that keeps you guessing until the very end. I love it all. The characters, the story, the direction, the music, the black and white film. It's not always easy to explain why a film has come to be known as one of the “all-time greats.” That is, the explanations never truly do the film justice. All I can say is that you owe it to yourself to see Casablanca. Once you do, you'll understand its appeal. And I bet you'll love it too. Quicklets: Learn More. Read Less.
