Five Decades of Poetic Bliss; Poetry, to the reader, creates a myriad of scene, mood, characters, and emotion. To the poet, finite dominates the abstract. We may strive for purity, a stereoscopic view, but the human mind is like a fingerprint, unique. From the day you first picked up a crayon, pencil or pen, you're the artist, writer, or poet. My first poem, The Hawk, was written at the age of nineteen during a blizzard. I was on guard duty, freezing, shuffling in place to keep the core warm and the grey cells firing. I remember reciting each line over and over, adding the next, and so on until hours later the truck finally arrived. Back in the barracks, with steaming socks inches from the oil stove, I put it to paper. Two months later, it was published in the Stars and Stripes, a military magazine distributed throughout the armed forces. The poems and lyrics in this collection are the product of one person over five decades, but without the many people, places and situations that gave them life, they would never have seen print. Any credit is willingly and gratefully shared.
