I wrote this novel because I have always wondered about the concept of love. Specifically, I have wondered about the difference between sacred and profane love as Titian depicted in his famous painting of the same title. Sacred love is the lofty feeling, a fanatical urge, to love an unobtainable being like Christians feel of the Virgin Mary. This is what the troubadours called Courtly Love, the overpowering, unfulfilled longing a knight felt for his lady. This love captivated Richard Wagner's entire opus, especially in 'Tristan and Isolde.' Listen to the 'liebestod' in Act III where Isolde begs for death so she can be rejoined with her beloved Tristan. Profane love is the common relationship between men and women. Unlike Sacred Love, this love includes carnal pleasures. We recognize profane love's ability to destroy as Josef von Sternberg's 'Der Blaue Engel' with Marlene Dietrich's classic performance as Lola Lola the prostitute.
