I wrote this series of four books because I wanted toadvance a pro Southern view of the War Between the States. This is not a racist, pro slave view, but a balanced view that mostly dwelt on theother two major sectional issues prominent in the years leading up towar. These were the question of a punitive tariff which is a tax ongoods coming into the country, and the rights of individual states togovern themselves rather than having laws imposed by a nationalgovernment. SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST, the first book, introduces two maincharacters that are captured by pirates outside of Baltimore and takento New Orleans.HILSON'S FAMOUS MINSTRELS follows the exploits of JackHilson as he spies on the North by means of his minstrel show. 1871covers the exploits of another major character as he is forced out ofChicago, down the Mississippi to New Orleans. EMPEROR OF NEW ORLEANSdeals with how the various characters live and organize the post war New Orleans underground.
