This story is, in essence, a delightfully entertaining take on the phrase "to lose one's breath." Rather than considering this phrase in the figurative sense, as it is meant, Poe decides to tackle it as literally as possible. The main character of the story quite literally loses his breath and finds himself surviving a number of deathly occurrences precisely because he has no breath to lose. His desperate search for his breath makes for a hilarious story and Poe's description of the affair could only be described as witty. Clever, amusing, and completely bonkers, this short story offers everything that a Poe fan could desire.
