There, he encouraged his students to use photography as a social medium.§ In 1908, he left his teaching position and became a photographer for the National Child Labor Committee.§ Hines photographs showed the harsh conditions of child labor, which led to new child labor laws in the United States.§ In 1930, Hine was commissioned to photograph the construction of The Empire State Building.
