INTERESTING FACTS: In 1853, Hill studied portraiture and still life painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He also studied under painter Peter Frederick Rothermel. In 1854, he traveled to the White Mountains in New Hampshire and sketched with members of the Hudson River School. In 1862, Hill made his first trip to Yosemite Valley with photographer Carleton Watkins and painter Virgil Williams. In 1867, Hill became a leading member of the Hudson River School. In 1870, he settled in California, spending his summers in Yosemite Valley. Hill is often referred to as the "Artist of Yosemite."
