" You will not be able to find mention of the island of Ithaca, Nebraska or its largest city, Ahamo on any map. But if you have sailed far enough toward the prime meridian of life to have arrived at your own personal era of the Middle Ages then either it just awaits you over the horizon or you’re there now (whether you know it or not) or you’ve already been there and are now, one would hope, moving forward with your life. The island of Ithaca lies nestled within the Bogs of Mediocrity, exactly in the center of the Misery River, which is located exactly due west of Denial, which as we all know ain’t just a river in Africa." Thus opens the novella Ithaca by Leslie Gries. If you are bogged down in your own personal Middle Age or about to be so or have once been then this irreverent look at life is for you. The novella examines one day in the life of its heroine as she is way-laid time in her journey home. She encounters Walter Miser, the world's richest man and his Yorkie - Wallstreet; Guido Canoli (Ithaca's superintendent of schools) whose motto is: One universe, one school system; Tiffany Ephiphany; and the orphans from St. Eugene's of O’Neill Rooms for the Misbegotten Orphanage. It's a long journey for a single day, but in the end it's worth it.
