The image of a koala in the closet accurately reflects the spirit brought to life in this surprising collection of fantasy flash fiction created by Ginés S. Cutillas. A koala is a very nonthreatening, affectionate animal, even somewhat absurd. What’s odd is that it appears so far from the context of its natural habitat, but for some mysterious reason, we matter-of-factly accept the new world formed by two seemingly opposing planes – wherein lies the irresistible charm of these stories. Amongst the indefatigable invention of scenarios, we observe the paradoxical juxtaposition of encountering the unknown in the normalcy of our daily lives. Two elements we would never imagine together are nevertheless intertwined – at times with ironic humor and others with subtle perplexity. Mirrors, separations, dislocations of space and time, all sorts of strange links between reality and dreams, routine and surprise, the tangible and the imaginary. These stories not only capture the intrigued reader’s attention, but also surprise the puzzled protagonists as the unexpected hypotheses unfold, forever instilled in the reader from that moment on.
