Ellen Payne Osborn was a special young woman whose life ended on December 19, 2011, when she was just 36 years old. This piece is her father's recounting of Ellen's unflagging spirit as she dealt with the loss, pain, and disability brought about by multiple sclerosis. The author, a college health professor, suggests that despite these disappointments and limitations, Ellen remained healthier than many physically healthy people by drawing on her emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual resources, as well as her remaining physical and occupational ones, to live a life—however brief—of conviction, compassion, productivity, and humor. The piece would be of interest to anyone who is afflicted with a chronic or terminal illness, as well as to those affected by it.
