Yankee Tsunami: The Ocean Erupts (English Edition) [Kindle-editie]

Yankee Tsunami - The Ocean Erupts, by Andrew DiConti is an historical novel that covers a period of a year, (1898-99) aboard the ship, USS Boston, an innovative warship for the period. The novel follows the Boston and the exploits of Gamble Crane, a newly enlisted sailor, into exotic ports of call. The novel's romantic story is complicated, as Crane falls in love with a girl of Chinese ancestry from Monterey, California. Even though Emily is an American citizen born in California, this relationship if left to develop would be considered scandalous. Gamble's risky adventure with Emily to free two young girls forced as literal slaves into the abyss of prostitution begins his metamorphosis as an advocate for human rights and equality. The experience helps Gamble understand how Emily Chan fought myriads of obstacles to gain acceptance in the white community of Monterey. Now influenced by Emily, Crane begins to view the people in each port differently from his shipmates and other whites. Because Gamble Crane is successful in his interaction with native peoples in the Asian Pacific Rim, the reader gets to see a very different picture of what the world was like. The reader learns how the governing principle of Manifest Destiny, which settled America, was not seen as kindly by peoples of those countries. Be it Nelson Ma, a Eurasian rickshaw driver in Hong Kong; Wan Chun-hua, a retired officer's wardroom cook; the three Paoa brothers, true Hawaiian people; Maria Chivas, the daughter of a rich Filipino plantation owner; or Molly, a resourceful Shanghai singsong girl--they all have an indelible impact upon ...the life of Gamble Crane.
