BATT TO BEAR, by Cy A Adler, is the first complete guide to walking the Hudson River Shore Trail north to Bear Mountain from Battery Park in lower Manhattan. This trail, consisting of pathways through parks and forests, riverside communities, abandoned railroad tracks, and Revolutionary War sites, was scouted by Cy Adler and fellow Shorewalkers in the 1980s and 1990s. The varied and beautiful shore trail is easy to walk most of the way. One can use the guide to walk for an hour or a week. The average walker can reach Bear Mountain two to four days. The trail is divided into eleven segments of 2 to 9 miles. Each segment has a route map and directions. This book will guide fisherman, birdwatchers, saunterers, environmentalists, and vacationers as well as walkers. It describes characteristic plants, flowers and birds, and includes maps and suggestions for camping, hoteling, and picknicking. BATT TO BEAR brings an extraordinary recreational resource to a wide public and will convert many into walking Hudsonphiles. Save and savor our shores. Introduction by Pete Seeger, musician, composer, shorewalker.
