“Displaced Persons” was the polite term used to speak and write about millions of human beings who were torn from their homes and way of life by the political manipulations and violence of World War II. Young Johannes Becker was one of the many children forced to flee with his family. His flight from Russian territory through Poland to Germany was a journey of many months covering more than one thousand miles. The first step was being wrenched from the home that the family had known for more than one hundred years. The dangers along the way were many: Hostile populations, disease, wagon breakdowns, families separated by the confusion. Even when the family finally found “safety” it turned out to be a tenuous safety, as the war slowly ground to its conclusion.
