This book is a duet for two voices, in two times: First, a town in the South, 1940 - 1950, where forces twist and cripple everyone they touch; the voice is that of Sally, a white child, granddaughter of slave-owners, trapped by those forces into a social picture she cannot avoid participating in, even as she depends for care and love on Lila, a black woman, granddaughter of slaves. The second act: The same town, 1979 - 1983. Sally and Lila come together again and are trying to understand the past and build a new connection in a world that is still divided by bitterness and fear. There are other voices in this book, from Sally's family and Lila's family. From Dance; Bessie and her snake baby; Uncle Chillus; Mr. Perk-ups. A duet with voice accompaniment, characters criss-crossing, black and white, in time and tale.
