The Uprising Uprising is a one act play loosely based on the events during the Nottingham riots of 1812. It centres around a group of cotton mill workers who will be forced to pay increased rent for their houses, which were once subsidised by the employer. With many of them struggling to make ends meet as it is, this comes as a real cause for concern. The workers meet first to discuss actions they can take to stop this bill from coming into force. They begin by signing a petition and sending it to the Mayor. Whilst he shows a level of sympathy for the workers to begin with, he soon realises his post is secured by those who are wealthier. After a little thought the Mayor decides to recruit a public guard for fear that by ignoring the petition it may spark a more aggressive course of action. With the workers seeing no results from the petition they decide to march, a peaceful protest to show solidarity. As they approach the house of one of the wealthy landowner (Lenthall) panics, and from the security of standing behind the guard he fires a shot into the crowd. This turns the protest in to something far more riotous. Through fear and confusion the workers run, and are engaged in skirmishes with the guards. To seek recompense an unknown worker sets fire to one of the factories. In the trial that follows Thomas Payne is convicted of leading the riot and is sentenced to death by hanging. With false evidence given against him, and justice blind to the plight of the common man, this is a story of the struggle for human rights and equality amongst the classes. First performed at the Playhouse Nottingham and due to have extracts performed in the Misguided Diaries project.
