Un Coeur Simple - A Simple Soul [French English Bilingual Edition] - Paragraph by Paragraph Translation (French Edition) [Kindle-editie]

Un Cœur Simple (A Simple Heart), along with of Hérodias and La Légende de Saint-Julien l'Hospitalier (The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller), form a trio of short stories published in 1876, and they rank with the finest of Flaubert's work. They are indeed, as Mr. George Saintsbury says, and Zola and other critics have not failed to remark, "examples, and very perfect examples, of all the styles which have made him famous. A Simple Heart displays exactly the same qualities of minute and exact observation, the same unlimited fidelity of draughtsmanship which distinguish Madame Bovary and Sentimental Education. The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller shows the same power over the mystical and the vague which is shown in The Temptation of St. Anthony. Herodias has the gorgeousness, the barbaric colours, and the horror of Salammbo. The Italian writer Italo Calvino has praised the Three Tales (of which Hérodias is one) as "one of the most extraordinary spiritual journeys ever accomplished outside any religion." Un Cœur Simple (A Simple Soul) is the story of a woman called Felicité. After Théodore whom she hoped to be with marries a rich woman instead just to avoid conscription, Felicité leaves the farm where she works and starts a position as a servant, and becomes a very loyal, giving person. Unable to forget her first love, she devotes herself completely to her new master, Mathilde and her children. But fate seems to always deny her from any love in return. But she is just satisfied in giving even though she doesn't receive anything in return. Her pet parrot accompanies her till the end. (Sometimes this story is referred to as Le perroquet (TheParrot) in French. Gustave Flaubert (December 12, 1821 – May 8, 1880) was a French novelist of the realistic era. He is considered one of the greatest Western writers. Flaubert was a pure stylist. He avoided the inexact expressions, abstract or not quite fitting writing which plague ordinary writing. He hated clichés. This explains the inordinate amount of time he spent on some his works, writing and rewriting portions. He also was averse to bourgeois stupidity. His masterpiece is Madame Bovary (1857), and other important works include Salammbô (1862), L'Éducation sentimentale (Sentimental Education) (1869), The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1857), Trois Contes (Three Tales) (1877), consisting of Un Cœur Simple (A Simple Heart), his tribute to Georges Sand, La Légende de Saint-Julien l'Hospitalier (The Legend of St. Julian the Hospitaller), and Hérodias. The Italian writer Italo Calvino has praised the Three Tales as "one of the most extraordinary spiritual journeys ever accomplished outside any religion." He died on May 8, 1880, at the age of 58. Project Bilingual Project Bilingual is a continuing effort making available great original works in translation optimized for ereaders. Traditional bilingual books typically reserve one page for the original text while displaying the translation on the facing page. Ereaders require smaller units of translation and original text to be compared for gadget size limitations. This necessitates a breakdown at the level of paragraph, which is the method adopted by the Project Bilingual. Relatively long paragraphs were split into smaller units for practical considerations.
