Topics in Special Education: Inclusion Works! An Informative Guide for Parents of Children with ADHD or PDD/Autism for Working with Your Child’s School to Create an Inclusive Educational Experience is intended to give the parents of a special needs child with an ADHD or PDD/Autsim diagnosis some background information, from a special education teacher/advocate's perspective and experience, about inclusion and to help to inform and guide decisions for the child’s special educational setting and program. There are definitions and examples included to illustrate certain concepts and to help to guide parents in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Plan process, but this is written with the knowledge that there are always multiple ways to solve any issue. Children are individual human beings, after all, and that means that each situation with each child is unique and should be treated as such. The author’s personal perspective regarding inclusion and special education is included, as well, and is intended to give the reader food for thought. Nothing in this book is intended to replace the parent’s own best judgment or perspective on what is best for their child. In fact, the author believes that the parent is the best expert on his or her own child, and their opinion, in any matter concerning their child, should be weighted with that in mind.
