Needing funds to salvage their precious family manor house situated in a quaint East Anglian village, Giles and Loppy Penrose sell a field known as Thorny Acres to a developer. Barging through social barriers, Loppy becomes involved in the lives of residents of the subsequent small housing development called Hawthorns, and becomes a valuable ally when trouble assails her newfound friends. Even though scatty Sue may be indulging in a self-induced angst trip, her friends rally round to try and sort her out. Ginny tries to hide her far more serious problems, but is eventually forced to turn to her neighbours. And things don't always run smoothly for the men and children in their lives. Kirsty, who hasn’t got any problems, is somewhat bemused but pitches in with whatever crisis is going on. As for Loppy, she romps through it all. With humour mixed in with some gritty issues, Thorny Acres is about life, relationships and the value of friends.
