Hansel lives a frugal but happy life at the edge of the forest with his mother and his father, a poor woodcutter. When their mother dies giving birth to Gretel, the woodcutter remarries. The stepmother despises his children, persuading him that the old woman who lives in the deepest part of the forest would be able to provide for the children so much better. With a heavy heart, he sets off to abandon the children for her to find them. But all is not what it seems in this bold reshaping of the classic tale.
