It was originally a Catholic mission, moved to the city of San Antonio from the Rio Grande by Padre Olivares, about 1718. The mission was called San Antonio de Valero and consisted of a monastery and church, surrounded by high walls.(from Part II: The Battle of the Alamo) The Texans, or those of them that were left alive, fell back into the mission building. They had piled bags of dirt in its windows and doorways, and upon the roof, and behind these defenses they prepared to make their last stand. The Mexicans poured over the wall like a torrent, filled the courtyard, and surged around the building on all sides. Colonel Travis turned his one cannon upon them and fired a few telling shots before he was overwhelmed. At every door, and soon in every room, there was a desperate, merciless struggle. Quarter was neither asked nor given.(from Part III: Eyewitness Account of a Survivor of the Alamo) “I had hard work keeping Colonel Bowie on his couch. He got hold of his two pistols and began firing them off, shouting all the while to his men not to give up. He was raving. I had moved his cot to the arched room to the left of the entrance to the church. Finally, a bullet whizzed through the door, grazing my chin—see, it left a scar which is there today—and killed Bowie. I had the Colonel in my arms. I was just giving him a drink.”About the authors:Richard H.
