In the summer of 1975, a man of forty led three teenage boys into California’s Sierra Nevada mountains for a ten-day backpacking trek. The party’s experiences in the wilds are described in a journal that is unique among nature writings on several levels: 1) no attempts are made at profundity; 2) the writing is infused with a spirit firmly stuck in the Sixties; and 3) the word nature is not capitalized, the Enormous Impact of nature upon the party’s members notwithstanding. The 6,300-word journal includes the author’s look back on the 1975 backpacking adventure nearly forty years later.
