Reached the quarter finals of the Breakthrough Novel Competition. The first of three "Silver Novels", all with a Chloe at the centre. This Chloe, fifteen, spent her early years in a Children's Home, but has now come to live with her elderly Aunt and Uncle in their cottage outside the village where Uncle George, though blind, works in the bakehouse. She is befriended by Clara, daughter of the local MP and invited to join this well-off family on a trip to France. She needs a passport and the difficulties in obtaining this stir up Chloe`s dormant curiosity about her origins. She is helped in her research by the local Vicar, an unconventional character whose hobby is cooking. Chloe has meanwhile met, and become very fond of Ronald, the Oxford undergraduate son of the local rich landowner - she meets him again in London on the way to France, and is encouraged by Clara to make a commitment. Chloe and Clara are taken ill whilst abroad, Chloe the more seriously. She stays on to convalesce at the invitation of their hostess, to whom she feels very close - could she have found her long-lost mother? After all, in the château museum she has seen a uniform with identical buttons to the one she has always treasured though she does not know how she came by it - and the jacket in the glass case has a button missing.
