George Bradley is twenty-three, goodlooking, confident, but from a modest background. He is training as a Building Site Manager. Old school friend, Stephen Robbins, studying dentistry, introduces him to his sister Emilia, known to her friends as Birdie. She initially charms George with her porcelain prettiness but he soon discovers that she is also exceptionally spoilt and capricious and the attraction fades fast. He decides to have nothing more to do with her but Birdie wants George and tricks him into marriage. When she suffers a serious road accident soon after the birth of their daughter Helen, he finds himself trapped, not least by his devotion to and his care of his daughter. Meanwhile, Birdie has developed an agenda of her own. Over the years George manages to carve out a workable existence, based on his determination to succeed in his career as a builder. He is helped in this aim by his father-in-law who comes from a background similar to George's. It is when he becomes involved in the personal affairs of one of his staff that he is finally forced to recognise the gaps in his own life. Before these can be identified and closed, fate plays a surprising and sometime cruel hand.
