These are poems inspired by Harlem, NYC. Not all of the poems are about Harlem directly. Indirectly , they all are. Let me explain: If you ask a hundred random residents of this historical, culturally rich, and rapidly changing neighborhood what it means to them, you might get a hundred different answers. My Harlem is beautiful, historical, political, graceful, violent, delightful, frightening, soulful, and exists as both idea, and reality in my head.It is a tune. It is parks. It is gentrification co-existing with folks who made the great migration from the South, the Caribbean Islands, and so many other places from the African diaspora. It was once known as the capital of Black America( for almost 100 years. It is changing rapidly. Although time will tell what all of this flux means, some of the long standing treasures have already been replaced by shiny and new people, places, and things. I walk these streets daily for inspiration. Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Ralph Ellison, and many of the countless greats , still feel somehow present. The moon at night ,is the same one that looked down over the years on countless other dreamers. I call Harlem the" Dream Inn". From the haiku to some of the longer poems, all of the works in this volume are the faces, images, and commentary that I see, feel, or face when looking up at the moon over Harlem. It is the moonlight that illuminates. It is falling in love, lust, or getting over a broken heart. It lights up the anger too. Or just dig the poems from your own Harlem in your mind , body , and soul. At the end of the day, Harlem is a village in Manhattan.
