Keith Cannon's remarkable memory and ability to process information allows him to excel at academics and music with little effort but also gets him in trouble. In retaliation to being bullied Keith pulls off the greatest prank in his school's history. Unfortunately, in high school there are no secrets and he is found out. His punishment is to serve detention with the school's somewhat eccentric wrestling coach. During their time together Keith meets his intellectual match. Coach Wolter gets into Keith’s head and convinces him to go out for the wrestling team. After a less than successful first year Keith commits for the first time in his life to a challenge that may be bigger than himself. With average athletic ability, a little excess weight and no skill Keith needs to figure out a way to compete on the mat. With the help of three friends and an unlikely acquaintance of his father, Keith is given an opportunity to succeed at his new sport. His efforts are made more difficult by three classmates who blame Keith for their family's financial struggles and do their best to make his life miserable. Derek, is the star of football team. Brandon is thug want-to-be and Ryan is a wrestling team mate with a reputation for hurting people on and off the mat. All three, along with their families despise Keith. Regardless of their efforts Keith finds a way to deal with them and chase after his goals. You don't need to be a fan of high school wrestling to enjoy this book. Several of the story lines center around the sport but the emphasis is on pursuing challenges, dealing with relationships of team mates, friends and enemies, and facing the death of a loved one.
