A memoir of a journey of the heart through war and depression from China to America and from tradition to independence. “Highly recommended” says Midwest Book Review. The author recounts her classical Confucian elementary school education in Hong Kong in the 1930's, followed by harrowing escapes from the Japanese army during World War 2 while she received a Christian missionary high school education in free China. Her life journey took her to the United States for college in Wisconsin and years of professional employment in American cities through which she wandered alone, unable to find a mate suitable to her family's requirements. Struggling with depression, she began a series of well-recounted world travels and family visits to Hong Kong, trying to resolve where and how to live her life. Her late marriage to a Caucasian American brought personal happiness but rift with her family. This book is an easy read filled with remarkable personal experiences, instances of uplifting courage and a love story with a striking resolution.
