Nonbabe is an unusual creature with a very sensitive nature. From the time she was born, she did not seem to possess the gift of speech. She lived in Florida with her mother Jellyfish and Nocido, her African-American nanny, who was not blind, yet could not see. Her friends were cats and guinea pigs. The days passed quietly in her county where the pace of life remained much like that of the early twentieth century. A traumatic experience during adolescence forced her to leave the safety of her homeland in search of her missing words, until she finally lost her mind. Only The Shuttle was able to bring her back, just as Astolfo and the hippogriff had done for the legendary Orlando. In picturesque Naples and lush Jamaica, Nonbabe later discovered the absurd secret that no one had ever been able to unravel. The epic poem Orlando Furioso, by the great sixteenth-century Italian author Ludovico Ariosto, is the “soundtrack” for this novel, which is constructed like a magical puzzle through flashbacks and time shifts.
