Homer's "Odyssey" is one of the foundation stones of Western literature, and still a rousing adventure story and moving human drama. This essay views it as a metaphor for a spiritual search, drawing on "Quest" mythology described by Joseph Campbell and others. Odysseus's quest to return to Ithaca and his family can serve as a guide for our own quest to return to an authentic sense of self. Far from being a historical curiosity, the "Odyssey" can teach us how to deal with the temptations and obstacles that keep us from that authentic self.
