The story is set in a Nature Reserve on the south coast of England not far from the ancient towns of Rye and Winchelsea. In the middle of the area sits Camber Castle built by Henry VIII which, quite soon after it was built, became redundant due to the receding of the sea to about a mile away thus disabling the canons from firing on enemy ships. Castle Water was once a gravel pit but has now filled with water and is a freshwater lake abounding in wildlife. Due to the unusual characteristics of the place it is now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and its historic links with the past make it truly atmospheric.
