This book describes the history of the French Violin School, from the Parisian advent of Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755–1824) at the Concert spirituel in 1782 to the phenomenal success of Charles de Beriot in the 1820s and 30s, and especially focusing on the generation directly influenced by Viotti. The characteristics of the School are described, with chapters on Viotti, minor colleagues of the early French School, Pierre Rode, Rodolphe Kreutzer, Pierre Baillot, and the French School in the 19th century. A list of violin concertos is included. The French Violin School composers used the traditions of the past, the technical innovations of the present, added their own unique contribution and created a style and form at once complete in itself and a harbinger of the future. Among the composers discussed, besides Viotti, Rode, Baillot, Beriot and Kreutzer, are Cartier, Durand, Vacher, Alday, Robberechrs, Lafont, Mazas, Dancla, and Alard. The book includes over 60 musical examples.
