A great book to get everyone into the mood for the Rugby World Cup in 2015. "The Dream of the Number 10 Shirt" is a fictional work about kids' rugby based very loosely on my experiences as a mini rugby coach in England (and a very vivid imagination!) The book tells the story of Dan Westley, a ten year old boy who plays for the Old Hardcastles, a mini rugby team with a ferocious head coach, Jock McGibbin. The OH's aren't very successful, and nobody seems to like them. They can't find kids to play for them, and no team wants to play against them. Dan wanted to join the smart local club Rosehill, but he couldn't even get on the waiting list. So he ends up at the OH's, with an old rickety clubhouse that has seen better days, and the end of a bumpy road called Tipps Lane. And nothing goes to plan. Dan wants to be the fly half (a coveted position in rugby), but coach Jock prefers another player called Tim, who isn't much good and loves to wind Dan up, but at rugby and at school. Life isn't much better at home either, with Dan having difficulty getting on with his Dad Bill's partner Tess, who doesn't see the point of rugby at all. But Dan perseveres, and eventually a new coach called Rod comes along, who starts to put things right, to the annoyance of Jock. In the end, he gets to go on a memorable tour to the Isle of Wight, where there is a World Cup theme. Will the OH's turn their season around? Will Rosehill go the season unbeaten and take the Cup? Will Tim get his come uppance? All is revealed in a nail biting climax, where matters are resolved on and off the pitch. "The Dream of the Number 10 Shirt" embodies the childhood dream of playing sport in a glamorous position, to escape to a world where anything is possible, away from some of the stresses of everyday life. The number 10 has been worn by stars such as Jonny Wilkinson, Danny Cipriani and Dan Carter in rugby, as well as Pele, Maradona and Lionel Messi in football. It will appeal to children of Dan's age (from whose viewpoint the story is written), older children and adults on a number of levels. It's a fun story with lots of ups and downs, giving those with a curiosity about rugby to want to know more, and those who love rugby to love it even more. The book focuses on the game at grass roots level, and has been pitched to appeal to a broad spectrum, with strong boy and girl characters. As rugby is a sport that is rapidly growing in popularity, and with the World Cup only a year away, this book uniquely occupies a space that will swiftly be filled in the years to come. It has good crossover potential, having been trialled successfully on the web site of Cobham Rugby Club. Children and adults will enjoy this even if they have a passing interest in sport. It will form part of a series, as we track Dan through his life and rugby playing career. I hope you enjoy cheering Dan on in "The Dream of the Number 10 Shirt".
