The Dissolution of the Modern Family is a satirical, psychological drama concerning a gravely dysfunctional family in the spirit of August: Osage County and American Beauty. The book is divided into two ‘windows’ (i.e. Life and Death). The first window focuses on the family united together for a nightmarish Thanksgiving holiday. The immediate characters are Lucy and her husband, Dan, and Dan’s stepchildren Katrina and Rocco. Dan, having a history of mental illness, is ostracized by Lucy’s sadistic mother and her deadpan father. Katrina, meanwhile, is harassed by Lucy’s brother, Austin, a sexual predator. By the end of the Thanksgiving vacation, Dan has killed Lucy due to a psychotic break, Lucy’s mother has accidentally blinded her husband, and Rocco has lost his virginity to the family dog. The second window of the story focuses on the devastating aftermath of Lucy’s death. Katrina, sinking into a whirlwind of despair and failed relationships, loses her virginity to a senior in her high school. Rocco becomes a heroin addict and gets busted. And Dan, deemed a victim of his medical treatment, gets released from prison. Once these characters’ paths cross again, all hell breaks loose.
