Mildred Aldrich’s The Critic's Story opens as a Chinese box. A young woman, Margaret Dillon, sacrifices her love to dedicate herself to her profession as an actress. When she becomes a diva she learns of his death. She is distraught and motionless before his coffin, she discovers a different man, exhausted and marked by the passage of time, but then she suddenly sees him in the image of his young child. At that time she understands that time will inevitably give her the same fate so she decides to disappear from the glittering world of the scenes in order to live with the man’s son whom he had loved vey much, perhaps under the illusion that each of us can be allowed to rewind time and start over again.
